‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ Musical Recap: Naptime’s Over

The songs were few and far between on the penultimate episode of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s second season. But hey, look on the bright side! That probably means the season finale is going to eat up whatever production budget is still left over from “Love Kernels.” And in place of lengthy musical numbers, “Is Josh Free in Two Weeks?” gifted us with a Seth Green cameo — a fair trade if there ever was one. Green’s presence on the show was overdue, considering he gave Rachel Bloom one of her early breaks by inviting her to join the Robot Chicken writing staff. And she repaid the Buffy fan favorite by casting him as… a delivery guy?

Not just any delivery guy, though. Green plays Patrick, the most patient and understanding delivery guy on the planet. And Rebecca is definitely in need of a little patience and understanding right about now, since her plan to organize a wedding in two weeks is backfiring spectacularly. The decorations are a disaster, the guest list is a mess (her dad has declined to attend, for example), and she’s getting very little help from her groom-to-be, Josh. At least Patrick listens to her, you know? He may not have much in the way of advice, but he’s certainly a good pair of ears.

Eventually, Rebecca does get by with a little help from her actual friends, up to and including former rival Valencia, who genuinely wants Rebecca and Josh’s wedding to go off without a hitch. Even perpetual cynic Nathaniel gets into the spirit of the event, flying Rebecca’s dad into West Covina to see his daughter walk down the aisle. Lest you think the season will conclude with a happily ever after, this episode ends with the return of Trent, who vows to raise a ruckus before anyone can be declared husband and wife. So expect lots of music, and plenty of drama, on next week’s finale to tide us over until Season 3.

“Man Nap”
What it’s about: Dr. Darryl’s prescription for diet-related distress? Take one man nap, and call me when it’s 3 p.m.
Sounds like: The majesty — and flowing locks — of a hair rock band like Styx.
Best lyric: “Oh baby, the day is long, work is stressful, it’s exhausting being so damn strong.”
Funniest sight gag: Nathaniel following Darryl’s advice and using his suit jacket as a handy blanket.
What it reveals about men: We don’t like to nap lest folks think we’re weak. But when we do nap, we nap hard.

“Tell Me I’m OK”
What it’s about: Grasping at sanity straws as the wedding planning spirals out of control, Rebecca turns to the only person who can attest to her emotional stability: Patrick, the delivery guy.
Sounds like: The Stephen Sondheim version of a Fabulous Baker Boys torch song.
Best lyric: “I think I’m fine, Patrick, but I’m only like, 43 percent sure.”
Funniest sight gag: The befuddled look on Patrick’s face when he finds himself inside Rebecca’s piano lounge fantasy, which gets only more befuddled when he ends up on top of the piano.
What it reveals about Rebecca: She’s so desperate for validation, she’ll even accept it from a complete stranger.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend airs Fridays at 9 p.m. on the CW.
