Colin Hanks Plays Astronaut Like His Father on 'Drunk History'

On Tuesday’s episode of Drunk History, Colin Hanks played the role of Gordon “Gordo” Cooper. Cooper was a military test pilot who became one of the first seven astronauts in NASA’s Project Mercury. Colin Hanks’s father, Tom Hanks, also played an astronaut, in the 1995 movie Apollo 13. Since this was Drunk History and a very drunk Laura Steinel narrated it, the results were much different than the Oscar-winning film. Tom Hanks didn’t have to mouth a severely inebriated narrator’s words as Colin did.

According to Steinel, Cooper liked to be called “Gordo” because he was “chill.” Cooper orbited the Earth in a Mercury capsule and safely navigated his way back into the Earth’s atmosphere after a malfunction. Steinel recapped Cooper’s speech after landing as, “Hey, guys, I made it. I’m not surprised. It’s me, Gordo. Big whoop.”

Drunk History airs Tuesdays at 10:30 on Comedy Central.
