Former Disney Channel star Cole Sprouse — best known for playing Cody Martin in The Suite Life of Zack and Cody (2005–2008) and The Suite Life on Deck (2008–2011) — has been cast as Jughead, our sister site Deadline reports. Riverdale’s Jughead Jones is Archie’s former best friend; their de-friending remains a sore subject between them.

(There’s no word yet on whether Riverdale‘s Judghead will be asexual, as revealed in a recent Archie comic, though his initial character breakdown states that he could be hearing-impaired.)

Sprouse promptly celebrated the news of his casting on Twitter:

Additionally, Surviving Jack‘s Lili Reinhart will play Betty Cooper, an all-American gal with a big ol’ crush on the pilot’s yet-to-be-cast leading man. But when Betty grows tired of being so perfect, she turns to her also-uncast bestie Veronica for help.

Riverdale, which hails from über-producer Greg Berlanti, is described as a “subversive” take on the famous Archie comic series, exploring the comic book characters’ seemingly idyllic town.
