Colbert Calls Trump a ‘Huge P***y’

To the argument that Stephen Colbert’s Late Show may be losing ratings to Jimmy Fallon because Colbert is “too political” or “too liberal,” we can now say that Colbert has clearly decided he’s going with what feels right to him. And at the moment, calling out GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump on a nightly basis — which actually means “barely keeping up with what Trump said today” — is yielding some of Colbert’s most striking moments.

I noticed an increased willingness on the comedian’s part to call a lie a lie when Trump made his “announcement” that President Obama had been born in America, and that Hillary Clinton had started the whole birther movement. On his Sept. 19 show, Colbert said he was pretty sure it was Trump who’d been fanning the birther controversy, although he admitted, “I could be wrong: Maybe I remember it one way, and Donald Trump is a liar.” Calling Trump a liar outright is something still rare in late night.

On his Oct. 3 show, Colbert brought up newly reported accusations by some former Apprentice contestants that Trump sexually harassed them and that he wondered aloud which of them would be “a tiger in bed.” Colbert wanted to clarify things, however: “He’s the real tiger in bed: He’s orange, he’s got a lot of hair, and every day he refuses to come on this show, he proves he’s a huge p***y.”

The studio audience gave Colbert a gratifying Oooooh! for his naughty cat pun. Earlier in his monologue, Colbert played a clip of Trump telling his followers to go out, vote, and then stick around to monitor their polling booths, because, said the candidate, “I hear too many stories about certain areas [and] we can’t lose an election because of you know what I’m talking about.” Colbert came back from the clip feigning bafflement, saying, “Donald, you left out all the nouns there.” He added, “Being a demagogue is like jazz — it’s the racism you don’t say.”

Let Fallon continue to win the ratings and do the verbal equivalent of mussing Trump’s hair — Colbert has decided he’d really like you to know which side of history he’s on in this election.

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on CBS.
