‘Chasing Life’ Canceled By ABC Family After 2 Seasons

Days after the Season 2 finale of Chasing Life, ABC Family has opted not to renew the series for a third season.

The cancer-themed drama saw its second season premiere moved up by more than a month, from the originally announced Aug. 17 to July 6, airing behind The Fosters. Chasing Life‘s viewership dipped in the second season vs. Season 1, which had ABCF’s flagship drama Pretty Little Liars as a lead-in. Chasing Life ended its run with a series low of 486,000 viewers for the Season 2 –and now series finale — half of the audience of its Season 1 closer.

Chasing Life had been a favorite of ABCF brass before and after the regime change at the network. It received a second-season renewal ahead of its Christmas special and second portion of Season 1 last fall, marking the first major pickup decision after the arrival of Karey Burke as EVP Programming and Development. Previously, months ahead of the series premiere, Chasing Life was given a seven-episode back order, bringing its freshman season to 20 episodes.

Adapted from the successful Televisa Spanish-language Mexican television series, Chasing Life — about twenty-something journalist April (Italia Ricci) who is diagnosed with cancer — was a co-production between BV Family Productions, Lionsgate, and Televisa USA in association with ABC Family. The series was executive produced by Aaron Kaplan, the project’s writers Susanna Fogel and Joni Lefkowitz, as well as Sean Smith.
