Caitlyn Jenner Talks About Fatal Car Crash, Possible Jail Time

Caitlyn Jenner, fresh off her first talk show appearance on Ellen, made another television appearance on Wednesday’s edition of Today. Though her interview with Matt Lauer was on a sunny golf course in California, it wasn’t entirely lighthearted.

Jenner might face a misdemeanor manslaughter charge because of a fatal car crash on the Pacific Coast Highway back in February. The accident, which involved four cars, left 69-year-old Kim Howe dead. Howe’s family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Jenner.

Lauer asked the reality star what she remembered from the event, to which Jenner replied, “Very little. I remember it happening. That’s about it. You know, obviously, it’s something… I’m in litigation and I can’t really talk about. A tragedy like this, you’ll never get over it. You just learn to live with it the best you possibly can.”

An investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department determined that Jenner, while not violating any traffic laws, was driving too fast and that was a factor in the crash. Jenner denied she was speeding, “... I was under the speed limit,” she said. “I was going 46 in a 50, and my airbag didn’t even go off. All I needed was half a second, you know, of time. I almost got stopped, but couldn’t quite get it stopped, I was pulling a trailer. So, no, I don’t think speed was anything like that.”

If Jenner were to be charged, it would be by the L.A. County district attorney’s office. There is doubt she will actually face criminal charges. Still, Lauer asked about the worst case scenario for Jenner, which would have her spending a year in a county jail. She replied, “The media wants that picture, don’t they? That is the worst case scenario. I don’t know. We’ll see. The men’s county jail. It is an enormous problem that they would put trans-women in a men’s county jail.”
