Broadway Star Laura Benanti Does Seriously Impressive Melania Trump Impression on ‘Late Show’

The Late Show host Stephen Colbert had Broadway star and Melania Trump lookalike Laura Benanti on to poke fun at the speech given by the wife of Republican nominee Donald Trump on the first night of the Republican National Convention. Melania Trump was accused of plagiarizing a portion of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Democratic National Convention speech from 2008.

“Welcome, Mrs. Trump. I understand you have a statement,” Colbert said. “Yes, that is true,” Benanti responded as Trump.

Colbert asked, “And this statement was written by the same staffers that wrote last night’s speech?” “Yes, I wrote it,” Benanti said, drawing laughter.

Benanti, who TV fans know from Supergirl and Nashville, then launched into a speech with lines that you just might recognize from other works. “I did not plagiarize my speech last night, I would never do such a thing. I would not, could not, with a goat. I would not, could not on a boat,” she insisted. “Give me a break. Break me off a piece of that Kit Kat bar. … I am mad as hell and I am not going to take it anymore. You’ve got to fight for your right to party.”
