'Broadchurch' Finale Sneak Peek: Ellie and Hardy Interrogate Lee

Broadchurch’s second season comes to a close this week with the promise of Hardy (David Tennant) and Ellie (Olivia Colman) solving the Sandbrook case. Of course, that episode also ended with the announcement that the jury had reached a verdict in Joe’s murder trial — and we’ll hear it early in the finale. Is there a part of actor Matthew Gravelle that wishes Joe had gotten to testify? “Absolutely,” he tells Yahoo TV. “I’m sure Joe would have made a complete mess of it, but yes. I’d kind of been mute in a glass box watching everybody else speaking, so it would have been a bit of a release, a bit of a catharsis, to be able to actually speak myself.”

Watching the other characters testify wasn’t easy, he says. “I did find it very difficult because that’s the one thing that was kind of a luxury to me in not being able to testify — I got to really listen to everything, so I could react as honestly as I could to whatever was going on. So the hardest thing to see was my son trying to cover for me, bless his heart, and seeing my wife out there as well, and also seeing Mark, best friend, that was tough — him trying to keep it together and doing his best but still crumbling.”
