Breast or Worst Joke Ever? Ellen Sued for Defamation

In a segment on The Ellen DeGeneres Show called “What’s Wrong With These Signs,“ DeGeneres took a cheap knock at a Georgia realtor with a seemingly silly name, calling her “Titty Pierce.”

But the realtor, whose name is Tee Tee, a Nigerian word for flower, found nothing funny about Ellen’s joke and is suing for defamation. To quote the lawsuit, “Ms. Pierce has suffered stress, emotional distress, embarrassment, humiliation, anger, and other mental pain and suffering.” The lawsuit claims *quote* “In her 35 years of life, no one has ever called her ‘titty.’”

Pierce claims she was travelling to Florida for a funeral during the show’s February 22nd airing, and she began receiving phone calls in which she was mocked and harassed by “cruel voices.” Her cell phone number originally appeared on the sign in the clip, but it has since been blurred out.

Pierce seeks unspecified monetary damages from Warner Brothers, and wants them to stop airing the segment on TV and online. She called The Ellen DeGeneres Show twice asking staffers to correct the mispronunciation and blur her cell phone number, but her requests were ignored, and the episode aired a second time on April 15th with her number still visible.

As Pierce’s attorney Stacey Godfrey Evans explains the case, Pierce wants to *quote* “stand up and say this is wrong and this not how we treat people. We need to be more thoughtful than this.” Ellen executive producers responded to the lawsuit, stating, “We try to have fun every day and make people laugh and never intend to hurt anyone’s feelings.”
