For the "NCIS" faithful, it's not news that Cote de Pablo — who plays Ziva David — is leaving the show. She announced that she was leaving just a week before filming began this season. Fans did what they could, tweeting, emailing, and even petitioning to get her back. When it became clear that it was not to be, though, most just settled in and prepared to make their goodbyes.
And the show delivered for fans who were anxious to spend time with Ziva. Here she is in conversation with Tony:
There are those who say you can't get the same emotions across through instant messaging as you can by actually speaking to someone. Well, that smiley emoticon just proved you wrong.
And here she is, later in the episode, once again speaking with Tony:
You can feel that, right? We're not the only ones who can feel the sexual tension just leaping off the screen? "Xo"? And to think they're broadcasting that kind of smut in the 8 o'clock hour!
OK, maybe we're laying it on a little thick. But the fact remains, Ziva didn't appear at all in this episode, one of only two before she's gone forever. (Or maybe not forever — in an interview with TV Guide, de Pablo says that Ziva doesn't die and "As long as a character doesn't die, the character can always come back.")
Point being: Fans were upset about a Ziva farewell episode without Ziva. The episode lived up to its title: "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot" (that's "WTF" or, in the saltier language of the Navy, "What the flip?!").
Ziva wasn't even in the first episode! WHAT THE HECK?! I only had two episodes left with her and you took away one?!?!— Morgan Malpass (@Morgan_Malpass) September 25, 2013
Just watched NCIS, awesome story and all, but WHERE THE HELL WAS ZIVA!!!— Tay (@NCISSS_Fan) September 25, 2013
Of course, some people were able to mourn without her:
"Want some company?"Yes" "Count to a million. On my way" #tiva Crying here on the floor... They are too perfect <3— I love you Damon (@DEendgame) September 25, 2013
And some people were a little more … territorial about their support. There was a new guy, Murray, sitting in Ziva's chair:
GET :) AWAY :) FROM :) ZIVA'S :) DESK :)— Fablo de Pablo. (@NCIS_n_THGfan) September 25, 2013
Others went with plain old paranoia:
@BrianDietzen I'm not at all sure that those Instant Messages actually came from Ziva. I keep thinking Princess Leia: "Luke, it's a trap".— Joni (@JoniHPetSitter) September 25, 2013
However this ends up, showrunner Gary Glasberg promises it'll be worth it:
Also in episode 2...prepare for an emotional payoff between Tony and Ziva like never before #NCIS - Gary Glasberg— NCIS (@NCIS_CBS) September 25, 2013
And to prove that they'll be making good on their promise, the promo for next week ends with this:
Which led to reactions like this:
A commercial for NCIS just came on and now I'm crying because Ziva and Tony's love is so real. :') #whatiswrongwithme— Maggie Barreau (@MaggieJeanB) September 22, 2013
FINALLY A TIVA KISS IM CRYING I NEED 4D— micah (@kaaskarth) September 25, 2013
And, well, basically enough of those to get Ziva and "NCIS" trending briefly on Twitter. Expect #Tiva to own the trending topics when Tony and Ziva, y'know, do more than text next Tuesday ;-) .
"NCIS" airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on CBS.
