Were the 'Dexter' Stars Cool to New Cast Member Sean Patrick Flanery? [Exclusive Video]
Just because you're a busy celeb doesn't mean you don't have time for a hobby. Sean Patrick Flanery — who's best known for his cult-classic roles in "The Boondock Saints," "The Dead Zone," and "Powder" — swung by Yahoo!'s "The Yo Show" to throw some punches with Kristen Aldridge and chat about being a black belt in Brazilian jiujitsu, his stint on the final season of "Dexter," and his palest role ever, as Jeremy Reed in "Powder."
So what's the scoop on his recurring role in the final season of Showtime's serial-killer drama? Sadly, Flanery had to stay mostly tightlipped on this new character, but he did dish a bit on who Jacob Elroy is. "I'm an ex-cop. I started a private-investigation firm. Debra Morgan [Jennifer Carpenter] works for me," Flanery said, adding, "It's been a great experience. Those guys have been together for so many seasons, and a lot of times when people have been together that long, they kind of have a machine operating system, a Henry Ford assembly line, and throwing a new cog into the system sometimes doesn't work. But they've been open arms. They've been really great."
How about a blast from the past? Flanery's lead role in the 1995 sci-fi drama "Powder" was pretty moving, and one of its most memorable aspects was Flanery's dramatic physical transformation, which he opened up about: "Physically, I lost a lot of weight. I don't know if you remember, but I weigh about 160 pounds now, and I went down to 141. I wanted him to look like a porcelain sculpture." And then shaving his head and eyebrows really took the character to a new place. Does he ever get recognized on the street for this role? "Absolutely no one recognizes me as 'Powder,'" Flanery said, laughing.
In this second "The Yo Show" moment, Flanery teaches Aldridge how to fight! Well, not exactly fight, but that defense move he shares is definitely worth noting. Flanery owns two gyms in the L.A. area and has been involved in martial arts since he was 9 years old.
"Dexter" airs Sundays at 9 PM on Showtime.
