The pounding of drums, the keening wail, a tribal chorus — many of the 27 seasons of "Survivor" have opened with that familiar refrain.

For "Survivor: Blood vs. Water," the team behind the opening credits once again put a unique spin to mark the new season. Shots of the cast are interspersed with imagery of blood, to highlight the theme of family members pitted against each other.

The opening also features quite a few insects and lizards, which seem to be the wildlife of choice this season.

It's always interesting to see which shots the editors choose to represent the players. Here, Candice looks appropriately intense, considering she's battling it out on Redemption Island. Gervase is gloating. Tina is smiling. Colton struggles to get into a boat.

"When 'Survivor' premiered back in 2000, the main title (show open) was as fresh as the format. Nobody was doing opens with this kind of bold, cinematic flair," noted executive producer and host Jeff Probst.

"We have the same creative team in place 27 seasons later. Scott Duncan is a world renowned cinematographer who has photographed every image for every Survivor open. He edits them with Sean Foley. Russ Landau provides the familiar score, always incorporating local sounds to make each open unique to the location."

"Survivor" airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on CBS.
