Victor Newman Pays Tribute to Katherine Chancellor at Her 'Young and the Restless' Memorial [Exclusive Video]

Sometimes actors don't have to act.

When cast members of the long-running CBS daytime drama "The Young and the Restless" gathered to film scenes for Katherine Chancellor's memorial service, the co-stars of actress Jeanne Cooper honored not only an iconic soap opera character, but also a real-life friend. In other words, those tears were real.

Cooper passed away on May 8, after nearly 40 years of playing matriarch Katherine Chancellor on the CBS soap, a role that earned her 11 Daytime Emmy nominations and a win for best actress in a daytime drama series in 2008.

In this exclusive sneak peek at the memorial episodes (airing September 3 and 4), actor Eric Braeden, who plays "Y&R's" wealthy businessman Victor Newman, delivers a moving tribute that includes a flashback clip with his longtime friend Kay. (We expect there will be a lot of those during this two-day tribute, so keep the tissues handy.)

After citing the fact that Katherine had "no such fear" of calling out people in positions of power, Victor adds, "Whenever she felt I needed to be told the truth, she wouldn't hesitate one moment."

Case in point: a flashback clip in which Kay asks him if he's going to be a better father and learn from his past mistakes.

"I forgive you that question, because you're an old friend and I love you," Victor replies. "But sometimes I feel that it is the children that have failed me rather than the other way around."

She asks him, "How are you going to learn from your past mistakes if you refuse to not repeat them in the future?" and he fires back with "And that, my dear Katherine, from the paradigm of motherhood, that's like the pot calling the kettle black, isn't it?"

Cue the laughter from the characters and the entire memorial service audience (which includes "Y&R" icons Melody Thomas Scott, Jess Walton, and Peter Bergman, as well as Cooper's real-life son Corbin Bernsen, who reprises his role as Father Todd Williams for the service) as Kay gives her old friend an affectionate tweak on the chin.

Victor's final words in the clip: "She always spoke the truth to me, no matter what, and I think I've become a better person for it. I know one thing: I will never meet the like of her again."

We'd say you don't have to live in Genoa City to feel that way.

The Katherine Chancellor memorial episodes of "The Young and the Restless" air Tuesday and Wednesday, 9/3 and 9/4 on CBS.
