"Thunder, thunder, thunder, ThunderCats!" If you can still hum along to the classic "ThunderCats" theme song (like we can), we've got some big news: Following in the footsteps of recent '80s revamps "Transformers" and "G.I. Joe," Cartoon Network is unveiling a fresh take on the beloved 1985-89 cartoon this week.

But these may not be the ThunderCats you grew up with. The brightly-colored look of the '80s version has been replaced here by darker, more anime-style animation. And the story has gotten an update as well: Rather than a large team of feline superheroes, the new "ThunderCats" focuses on a young Lion-O, who uses the powerful Sword of Omens to lead an army of cat warriors against evil sorcerer Mumm-Ra and his lizard soldiers.

But don't worry: The new series finds room for plenty of your favorite characters. Lion-O's joined in his epic quest by old friends Tygra, Cheetara, Panthro -- and, yes, even annoying companion Snarf. Kid siblings Wilykit and Wilykat appear here as well, orphans who've learned to survive by pulling off some nifty tricks.

It remains to be seen if this new "ThunderCats" can attract nostalgic young adults who were raised on the original series, or if they'll be turned off by all the changes. We have just one request for the new version: Don't change a note of that theme song.

"ThunderCats" premieres Friday, 7/29 at 8pm on Cartoon Network.
