Rhea Perlman and Danny DeVito reunite: A timeline of their relationship

The Juice

After separating in October 2012 following more than 30 years of marriage, news broke this week that Rhea Perlman and Danny DeVito have reunited and are now more in love than ever before. Hurray! Now we can believe in true love once again.

Let’s travel back in time to see how Danny and Rhea became one of Hollywood’s most beloved couples.

January 17, 1971 – Rhea Perlman went to see her friend perform in a play called “The Shrinking Bride,” in which Danny DeVito played a stable boy. He was 27; she was 23. They met for the first time that night at a cast dinner, and moved in together two weeks later.

1978 – Real life couple Perlman and DeVito play an on-screen couple for the first time on the sitcom “Taxi.” Perlman had a recurring role as Zena Sherman, girlfriend to DeVito’s character Louie De Palma, from 1971 to 1982. The role was one of Perlman’s first big gig.

January 28, 1982 – After 11 years of living together, Rhea Perlman and Danny DeVito got married on a rainy Thursday in Los Angeles. Perlman wore a rented antique dress, and DeVito had to rush home during a lunch break while he was filming “Taxi.”

1982 – Perlman is cast as Carla Tortelli in “Cheers,” her big break. She plays that iconic role until the end of “Cheers” in 1993.

March 1983 – Their first child, Lucy Chet DeVito, is born. Perlman tells People Magazine, “You'd really have to work hard at breaking us up at this point."

October 1983 – Perlman and DeVito host “Saturday Night Live” as a couple.

March 1985 – Their second child, Grace Fan DeVito, is born.

October 1987 – Their third child and only son, Jacob Daniel DeVito, is born.

1996 – Perlman and DeVito play a fictional married couple as the wicked Zinnia and Harry Wormwood in “Matilda.”

2006 – DeVito gets his biggest gig in the latter half of his career as Frank on the risqué FX comedy series “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”

October 2012 – Just after their 30th anniversary, Perlman and DeVito announced their separation. However, Perlman told the press they were still “working on it.” Meanwhile, reports surface telling of tension between the couple for the past ten years, mainly due to DeVito’s wandering eye and love of female attention.

December 2012 – DeVito’s good friend Michael Douglas lends a hand at repairing the marriage. “Michael loves Rhea and he told Danny he will never find another woman quite like her. They complement each other perfectly and are the best of friends,” a source told Radar Online. “He said he should do whatever it takes to win Rhea back and come to his senses fast before it is too late. It’s because of Michael they are talking to each other.”

March 2013 – Rhea and Danny announce they’re back together and completely in love, after he spent the last few months doting on his wife and showering her with romantic gestures. They’re even reportedly considering renewing their vows.

On behalf of the world: Thank you, Danny Devito and Rhea Perlman, for proving that happy endings aren’t only found in the movies!
