Many singing-show judge castings have been controversial, or at least eyebrow-raising (Nicki Minaj on "American Idol" and Britney Spears on "The X Factor USA" come to mind). But the latest reality-casting news thundering Down Under just may be the oddest yet. This week it was mind-bogglingly announced that the new judge for "The X Factor Australia," replacing former panelist (and original "Australian Idol" winner) Guy Sebastian, is...Redfoo.
Yes, Redfoo. The guy from LMFAO. You know, the guy who "sang" this on "American Idol" last year:
I must say I'm laughing my own A off over this unexpected news. The famously neon-Speedo'd, Afro-topped partyrocker, currently on indefinite hiatus from LMFAO, has joined Ronan Keating, Dannii Minogue (sister of Kylie), and Aussie pop starlet Natalie Bassingthwaighte for the fifth season of "The X Factor Australia," which started taping live auditions in Sydney this Monday. While there's a slight (like, fiftieth-of-a-percent) chance that Redfoo, who is actually the son of legendary Motown Records founder Berry Gordy, may draw on his family expertise to seriously critique the show, I'm guessing that he has mainly been hired for comic-relief purposes. So I imagine all of the contestants on Team 'Foo will end up wearing animal-print pants outta control, etc. They're in Australia, trick!
"The main key for me is just being myself," Redfoo told Australia's Daily Telegraph. "What will happen is I will just get into a zone and that is what the world has gotten from Redfoo, just a guy being himself, and that is what makes me unique. I just follow my gut, follow my instinct and follow my feelings. I just want to have fun."
In honor of Redfoo's bizarre new job, I present three recent talent-show cover versions of LMFAO's "Sexy and I Know It." I wonder how Redfoo would have judged any of these?
