An original castmember on the show, Washington was famously fired from the show in Season 3 after making homophobic remarks about costar T.R. Knight, who was not yet open about his homosexuality.

"It's important to me that Cristina's journey unfolds exactly as it should," Rhimes said in a statement. "Burke is vital to that journey — he gives her story that full-circle moment we need to properly say goodbye to our beloved Cristina Yang."

Washington's character Burke made his final appearance on the show in the Season 3 finale when he left Cristina at the altar on their wedding day.

Washington's return will be for just one episode in May, which is when Oh is also set to depart the series, but it isn't yet clear if it'll be her final episode, the Season 10 finale, or just an episode leading up to the big goodbye.
