A Play-by-Play of 'Secrets,' the New 'Game of Thrones' Trailer
Here's a rundown of many of the people and events that flash by in the new Season 4 "Game of Thrones" trailer. A lot of faces and places missing, but 90 seconds isn't much time to cover all the bases on a show like this.
Sansa Stark: "Do you know what they did to my brother and mother? I lie awake all night thinking about how they died." (0:02)
We see King Joffrey showing off with a sword (0:01), which is a very King Joffrey thing to do. Also, Roose Bolton rides up and sees his bastard son, Ramsay (0:07). Ramsay spent most of last season torturing poor Theon Greyjoy. Things are not getting better for Theon this season.
Cersei: "What good is power if you cannot protect the ones you love?"
Oberyn Martell: "We can avenge them." (0:17)
Much of the vengeance talk this season is focused on Oberyn and his family's quest for vengeance. More on that in a minute. We also see Cersei watching Jaime Lannister and Tyrion's buddy Bronn sparring in what looks to be a friendly manner (0:20). Even one-handed, Jaime's still a formidable swordsman. The question is, how much has that humbling experience affected him?
Yup, Arya's still with Sandor Clegane surveying the wreckage of Robb Stark's failed attempt to fight the Lannisters (0:14). While it would undoubtedly be more dangerous for her to be alone, being with the Hound is also not an ideal situation for her.
Jon Snow: "All that time I was gone; the world's falling apart." (0:24)
In Jon's mind, he's spent the past however long he's been with the wildlings as a traitor. Moreover, he's spent much of that time being intimate with Ygritte, which means that, in addition to betraying the Night's Watch and his vow of celibacy, his escape means he betrayed Ygritte as well. Considering he's still basically a teenager, his self-pity kind of makes sense. He's like a slightly less mopey Edward Cullen from "Twilight."
Nice to see Melisandre is still setting fire to people (0:29).
If you don't recognize that new bearded face, that's because it's Michiel Huisman (0:33), who replaced the previous Daario Naharis, Danaerys Targaryen's piece of eye candy. What happen to the previous Daario, Ed Skrein? Rumor has it, he's been tapped to replace Jason Statham in the "Transporter" franchise reboot.
Littlefinger: "Always keep your foes confused. If they don't know who you are or what you want, they can't know what you plan to do next." (0:31)
That's Oberyn Martell fighting with Gregor Clegane (0:39). The Martell family quest for vengeance is focused on the Mountain for crimes Clegane committed during the rebellion that put Robert Baratheon on the throne. You know how bad the Hound is? Gregor is his bigger brother and he's the one that burned him. If he's willing to do that to his brother, imagine what he did to the Martells.
Barristan: "Sometimes it is better to answer injustice with mercy."
Daenerys: "I will answer injustice with justice." (0:41)
The town she's trying to sack there is Meereen, largest of the slaver cities. Even with her army of Unsullied and her dragons, taking an enormous walled city is no easy task. It'll be a while before she makes it back across the Narrow Sea to take King's Landing.
