It's time to roll out the red carpet (literally!) for the Primetime Emmy Awards. But if this year's red carpet is anything like the past, some stars will need to have thick skin under those designer duds. Past Emmys red carpets have included everything from kisses to disses. Check out these buzzworthy red carpet moments of the past.

1. Kathy Griffin overwhelms Ryan Seacrest

At the 63rd Primetime Emmy Awards in 2011, comedian Kathy Griffin moved in for the kiss and made the moves on E! News host Ryan Seacrest. Griffin first asked Seacrest if he was "still banging the dancer." (That'd be Seacrest's ex, pro dancer Julianne Hough.)

After the comedian doled out a few more digs about his love life, Seacrest changed the topic to Griffin's makeup, saying her lips looked "very, very red." Then he asked her, "Have you left a mark on anyone?"

Bad line of questioning, Seacrest! Griffin used the inquiry as a cue to go for a sloppy lip lock.

"Oh, gosh," Seacrest said as she leaned in for a big, red smooch. "I don't really want this tape to exist." (But it does, Seacrest, it does!)

"The Good Wife" star Julianna Margulies played the good Emmy nominee and lent Seacrest a hand by wiping the Kathy off of his teeth. (Luckily she came by just in time with a hanky in hand to remove the red stains.)

The next year, makeup came into play again when Griffin paused on the red carpet and asked Seacrest to touch up her lip liner to make her lips "more plumpy." Instead, the E! host drew on her face with the lip liner. She got him back by drawing a mustache on him while chanting, "You are evil! Evil!"

2. Sarah Hyland gets busted by Giuliana Rancic

In 2011, "Modern Family" star Sarah Hyland mocked rival comedy series star, Lea Michele. When Hyland stopped by E!'s Fashion Police, she joked about the way the "Glee" star strikes a pouty pose on the carpet, doing an impression as she said, "It's just like, she puts her hands on her hips like this and like sticks out her collarbones — I don't know if you can see — she sticks out her collarbones to make her look skinnier and she sticks out her lips."

So, the next night on the Emmy carpet, Giuliana Rancic did what any good host would do: She called Hyland out for upsetting the Gleeks.

"They are very protective over her," Hyland said. "And I didn't mean it in any harm at all. When Joan Rivers asks, 'What does she look like on the red carpet?' you do it! She's hilarious, and it was just in jest and that was it. I hate that it's gotten to such a level. She knows how to work it, and I can't do what she does!"

3. Kat Dennings's red dress steals the arrivals attention

Kat Dennings put the "red" in red carpet in 2012, with a ruby strapless gown that left little to the imagination. The "2 Broke Girls" star rocked a whole lotta' cleavage in her J. Mendel gown, and the daring dress received plenty of attention.

The "very nervous" star did what she could to avoid a wardrobe malfunction, though. "If I stand up too straight, there's a possibility," she said. "So if I hunch, that's why. It's not because I have terrible posture, it's from fear of things coming out…"

4. Jimmy Fallon takes a dig at Amanda Bynes

Apparently there are no limos for Jimmy Fallon. On last year's Emmys red carpet, the late night host poked fun at one troubled celeb's DUI arrest and license suspension when he said he hitched a ride with Amanda Bynes.

"I'm just happy to be alive," he said. "I got to be honest; Amanda Bynes gave me a ride over. I'm just happy to be here." (Oh, snap! We'd hate to hear what he has to say about her after this year!)

Fallon also gave the scoop on his post-Emmy party plans — at Honey boo Boo's place: "She's having a raging after-party by the way," he told Ryan Seacrest. "Honey Boo Boo, thanks for the invite. We're gonna be doing some belly flopping, some tooth swapping, it's going to be nuts tonight."

5. Nene Leakes slams multiple celebs in red carpet fashion takedown

"Real Housewives of Atlanta" star NeNe Leakes didn't exactly play nice on the 2009 Emmys red carpet. The reality star teamed up with E! fashion commentators to give her own sassy brand of commentary on red carpet style, dissing "Gossip Girl" star Leighton Meester's knotted Grecian gown with this dig: "You can climb a mountain with those knots."

And after calling Debra Messing's orange Michael Kors Emmy gown "plain and simple," Leakes said the star could wear it next time she goes grocery shopping! (Wow, we've never seen Kors at grocery stores, so maybe we're shopping in the wrong places!)

But Leakes did give a thumbs up to one Emmy ensemble: her own. (OK, she thought Giuliana Rancic looked pretty good, too.)

Her final analysis: "I am not impressed," Leakes said of the red carpet talent. "Giuliana, you and I were the only ones dressed hot tonight ... the ladies were not bringing it!"

The 65th Primetime Emmy Awards will air live from the Nokia Theatre LA Live on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on CBS. Click here for full coverage of the red carpet and show.
