10 Awesomely Hysterical Emmy Speeches [Video]
Here we are now, entertain us! When it comes to Emmy Award speeches, we like them short, sweet, and funny. Luckily, over the years, many winners have amused us with dry wit, silly gags, or just outright astonishment. Check out 10 of the funniest Emmy speeches of all time.
1. Valerie Harper (1971)
Harper was used to making people laugh as Rhoda on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." But she really got people rollicking when she accepted her Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series award. Harper was so flustered, she used her trophy as a mike — until comedy legend Lucille Ball stepped in with some sage advice.
2. Meryl Streep (2004)
The acting queen has received 17 Oscar nominations (winning three), 27 Golden Globe nominations (winning eight), and three Emmy nominations (winning two). "Award" might as well be her middle name. But even so, "There are some days when I myself think I'm overrated," Streep purred. After a dramatic pause, she added, "But not today!"
3. James Spader (2007)
The 59th Annual Emmy Awards ceremony was a bit controversial for its round stage. As Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series winner Spader joked, "I've been to thousands and thousands of concerts in my life, and I can tell you these are the worst seats I've ever had."
4. Katherine Heigl (2007)
The "Grey's Anatomy" star was blindsided when named Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. But as she joked, even more shocked was her own mother, who didn't think Heigl "had a shot in hell."
