'Mad Men' First Look: Is Don Leaving on a Jet Plane?
"Mad Men" fans, prepare for takeoff: The seventh (and, sadly, final) season of AMC's expertly crafted period drama debuts April 13, and the network is giving us a tiny taste of what's to come with a photo and a brief teaser.
The photo and teaser both find exiled ad man Don Draper stepping off of a TWA airliner in his usual Madison Avenue suit and tie, fedora in hand. The teaser is frustratingly brief, but we'll take any morsel of "Mad Men" we can get, right? Click here to take a look:
Last we saw Don, he was taking an involuntary leave of absence from Sterling Cooper & Partners and finally opening up to his kids about his Dick Whitman past. Things were also rocky between him and wife Megan, and we can't help but notice he's conspicuously alone in the teaser.
Could Don be taking advantage of his downtime to travel the globe and come to terms with his split identity, once and for all? Or perhaps he's just visiting the newly-minted California outpost of SC&P, run by Ted Chaough and Pete Campbell. Or maybe the plane motif is simply a metaphor meant to convey how "up in the air" Don's life is at the moment.
A note on the music: The current soundtrack is an atmospheric, New Age-y instrumental piece that doesn't tell us much at all. But the teaser was originally set to Wax Tailor's 2004 reworking of the classic 1956 Doris Day tune "Que Será, Será" — which translates to "Whatever will be, will be," a nod to Don's newfound sense of personal acceptance. Plus, the original "Que Será, Será" was also the theme song of "The Doris Day Show," which debuted in September 1968, right around where we left off in the "Mad Men" timeline.
This morning, though, AMC abruptly yanked the teaser and re-released it with the new music. A simple rights issue? Or a case of the original song telling us too much?
in any case: Having freed himself of decades of emotional baggage, it looks like Don/Dick is finally ready to take flight. And thankfully, we only have to wait a few more weeks to watch it happen.
Season 7 of "Mad Men" premieres Sunday, Apr. 13 at 10 p.m. on AMC.
