'Homeland' Season 3 Teaser: Where In the World Is Brody?

Yahoo! TV

As you can see, uh, hear in the trailer above, Nicholas Brody will still be on the run when "Homeland" premieres its third season on Sept. 29.

The audio-only preview features the voice of Emmy winner Damian Lewis — as on-the-lam Brody — saying, "I need my passport," "Just need to get my strength back," and "Does Carrie know I'm here?"

That last one, of course, refers to his onetime nemesis/love interest Carrie Mathison, the CIA agent who was with Brody when the terrorist bomb exploded (the one for which Brody was blamed) in the Season 2 finale. Season 3 opens with the hunt on to track down Brody, while Carrie (Claire Danes) and Saul (Mandy Patinkin) try to survive the professional and personal fallout from the attack.

Because he's on the run — and clearly far enough away that he needs his passport — Lewis will have less onscreen time in the new season. And because Brody is out of sight, "Homeland" showrunner Alex Gansa told the Los Angeles Times, Carrie will have an opportunity to get the rest of her chaotic life back on track.

"Exonerating Brody will be in the back of Carrie's mind, but as you will see when you tune in to the first couple of episodes, that is not the narrative engine that takes us through the first half of the season," Gansa said. "It's there; she hopes to clear Brody at some point. But there's a whole lot more going on in her life than that."

Gansa also confirmed that even though Brody will be MIA from the central action of Season 3, his family, including daughter Dana (Morgan Saylor), will continue to be a part of the series. Diego Klattenhoff will return in the recurring role of Mike, Brody's former BFF and Jessica's current love; Sarita Choudhury returns as Saul's estranged wife, Mira; and F. Murray Abraham goes from guest star to regular cast member as he returns as retired black-ops specialist Dar Adal.

"Homeland" is also introducing a lineup of new guest stars this season, including Sam Underwood, who's currently playing a pivotal role in the final season of "Dexter," as Leo, a new (and, of course, troubled) friend of Dana's; Joanna Merlin ("Law & Order: SVU") as Jessica Brody's mom; Nazanin Boniadi ("How I Met Your Mother") as CIA analyst Fara; Amy Morton ("Boss") as Carrie's attorney Erin Kimball; and Gary Wilmes ("Jon Benjamin Has a Van") as a psychiatrist.

Rounding out the expanded cast: Martin Donovan ("Boss") joins as Washington, D.C. attorney Bennett; Pedro Pascal (who is starring in the fourth season of "Game of Thrones") will portray David Portillo, a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence; Pulitzer Prize winner Tracy Letts plays powerful senator Andrew Lockhart; and Shaun Toub ("Iron Man") will play Majid Javadi, a high-level Middle Eastern intelligence officer.

"Homeland" won six Emmys last year, including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actress and Actor in a Drama Series for Danes and Lewis, and Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series.

"Homeland" Season 3 premieres on Showtime on Sept. 29.
