black-ish Season 3 Premiere: EP Teases Dismal Disney Trip for the Johnsons

Mickey Mouse has no idea what he’s in for.

As teased in our Fall Preview Spectacularblack-ish‘s central family travels to Disney World in Orlando, Fla., in the Season 3 premiere. To ensure that his kids get the most out of their time on the property — which includes Epcot Center, Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disney Studios, etc. — Dre hires a VIP guide (played by Community‘s Jim Rash) to squire the family around the parks.

The initial results, series creator Kenya Barris tells TVLine, are less than magical (and based on an episode from his own visit to California’s Disneyland): Junior, Zoey, Jack and Diane take all the line-hopping and other privileges for granted, leading to major drama in the happiest place on Earth.

During Barris’ trip, “We’d ridden, like, 10 rides, and then there was a moment where [the VIP guide said], “We have to wait in this line,” the EP recalls. Cue the meltdown — on everyone’s part.

“I was like, ‘This is not real life!'” Barris says, laughing. “And I realized that it was my fault.”

Barris’ children “would have been fine just being together and being on the rides and being out there,” he says. “But it was me wanting to give them what I didn’t have growing up, which I thought was super important. What was really the best part of Disneyland is just being together. Some of that time being in a line [for an attraction] can be really fun.”

Speaking of those legendary line waits: Disney enthusiasts will be happy to hear that the Johnsons “go on a little bit of everything” including the Wild Africa Trek, Expedition Everest and Soarin’, Barris says.
