‘Black-ish’ Takes on Paternity Leave Stigma
On this week’s Black-ish, Bow’s pregnancy was revealed at the hospital, while Dre came to the realization that the time he spent with Zoey when she was an infant is what made her his favorite of the Johnson kids. When he declares his desire for paternity leave, the un-woke bros at his office had a field day, equating “paternity leave” with “lady stuff” and firing a barrage of emasculating barbs — so much so that Dre decided against taking the time off.
Meanwhile, Bow was passed up for a promotion at the hospital, prompting her to discuss the reason why with the board, and giving her the opportunity to drop this poignant truth bomb: “It’s just that our society hasn’t figured out how to support pregnant women or their employers. And we need to. I mean, women should be encouraged to celebrate their pregnancies, not to hide them. The system is not gonna change if doesn’t include the participation of everybody.”
