Bill O’Reilly Causes a Tweetstorm With Disparaging Remarks About Maxine Waters

Fox News host Bill O’Reilly went on Fox & Friends to talk about his new book, “Old School: Life in the Sane Lane,” but it was his remarks about Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., that are getting him the most attention, and not the good kind.

After the hosts played footage of Waters giving an impassioned speech on the House floor, O’Reilly said, “I didn’t hear a word she said. I was looking at the James Brown wig.”

Many people, including celebrities like Sophia Bush, took to Twitter to share their outrage over what a lot of people felt were racist and misogynistic comments by O’Reilly. Fox & Friends co-host Ainsley Earhardt attempted to defend Waters, telling O’Reilly, “You can’t go after a woman’s looks. I think she’s very attractive.”

The social media backlash clearly made it back to O’Reilly, as, several hours later, he apologized, stating, “As I have said many times, I respect Congresswoman Maxine Waters for being sincere in her beliefs. I said that again today on Fox & Friends calling her ‘old school.’ Unfortunately, I also made a jest about her hair which was dumb. I apologize.”

This isn’t the first time Waters has been targeted with derogatory comments. In 2012, The Five’s Eric Bolling went on Fox & Friends and said about Waters: “Congresswoman, you saw what happened to Whitney Houston. Step away from the crack pipe. Step away from the Xanax.” A lot of viewers felt Bolling should have been fired over the remark, despite his attempts to backtrack and say he was “kidding.”
