‘Big Little Lies’ Trailer: Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman Aren’t Afraid to Throw Around the Word Murder

Could “Big Little Lies” be the lady-powered answer to “True Detective” this spring? We live in hope, after watching the below trailer featuring Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern, Alexander Skarsgård, Adam Scott, James Tupper and Zoë Kravitz.

Bringing us into the aggressively nice world of the Monterey elite, the series features Witherspoon and Kidman as the queen bees of a community of moms “whose apparently perfect lives” (according to the official release) “unravel to the point of murder.” Get ready for no shortage of cattiness and backstabbing thanks to the pen of David E. Kelley, as the women prepare to throw each other under the bus thanks to a crime that will surely haunt all seven episodes of the series.

The early years of HBO were always been a bit lacking in estrogen, but in recent years, that’s changed with series like “Girls,” “Insecure” and “Divorce,” not to mention the improved status of the women who now rule “Game of Thrones.” It’ll be interesting to see how “Big Little Lies” fits into the canon of great series that have come before — hopefully, it has more in common with Nic Pizzolatto and Cary Fukunaga’s game-changing 2014 series (we’ll refrain from mentioning Season 2 here) than it does with “Desperate Housewives.”

Check out the trailer below. “Big Little Lies” premieres February 19, 2017 on HBO.
