BET Awards Recap: Artists Get Political

The 2016 BET Awards were Sunday evening and seeing as how this is an election year it was no surprise that things got political. While the show had several wonderful Prince tribute performances it also had several stars making political statements. The celebrities discussed everything from the upcoming election to gun control. Samuel L. Jackson warned that if people didn't get out and vote, the US could have it's own Brexit situation to deal with. But the most politically charged speech came from Jesse Williams, who had a lot to say about the current status of African Americans in the United States. He said, "We're done watching and waiting while this invention called whiteness uses and abuses us, burying black people out of sight out of mind while effecting our culture, our dollars, our entertainment like oil, like gold, demeaning our creations at stealing them, gentrifying our genius and trying us on like costumes before discarding our bodies like rinds of fruit."
