The Best and Worst TV Subs

With not-so-new New Girl star, Zooey Deschanel, on maternity leave, the Fox sitcom is welcoming an actual new girl, Megan Fox, into its expansive L.A. loft on the Feb. 9 episode. The Transformers star plays Regan, an intimidatingly gorgeous pharmaceutical who moves in with Nick, Schmidt and Winston while Jess remains sequestered on jury duty. (Read Ken Tucker’s review here.) But fans shouldn’t worry about Reagan’s name permanently replacing Jess’s on the lease; Fox’s residency is currently scheduled to last four episodes. Think of her as a substitute teacher or — if your brain prefers to process sports references — a pinch hitter, stepping up to the plate when the star player is sidelined. New Girl isn’t the first series to employ a temporary substitute for indisposed actors. Here are some of the best and worst subs from series past.

New Girl airs Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. on Fox.
