Arizona and Callie's Intense Custody Battle on 'Grey's Anatomy'

It was finally decision time on Grey’s Anatomy when the epic custody battle began. It was Team Arizona vs. Team Callie facing off over custody of their daughter, Sofia Robbin Sloan Torres, complete with a roster of Grey Sloan doctors set to testify. Callie’s side started with Owen testifying, singing her praises as a mom and adding that she found a school for Sofia in New York. But Team Callie didn’t stay strong for long. When Penny, the reason for this mess, took the stand, the questions quickly got trickier. Call it nerves or that she was in over her head, but Penny couldn’t even remember what grade Sofia was in.

Then Bailey took the stand, and in typical Bailey fashion, she instantly began to run the courtroom by acting like a lawyer and saying such things as “objection — speculation” in response to opposing counsel’s incessant questioning. But during her testimony, it became clear that Arizona’s professional schedule as a surgeon was less predictable than Callie’s. Arizona’s career isn’t the best for raising a child as a single parent, and although Bailey quipped, “I would never put a woman’s success in the con column,” the pediatric surgeon’s unscheduled procedures were indeed a negative.

Meredith testified on Callie’s behalf. And unfortunately for Callie, Arizona’s lawyer trapped Meredith into a single-parent corner, having her admit that it takes a village to raise a child, with Sofia’s village located in Seattle. The verdict was in, and we only saw the result when Meredith walked Sofia to the front door. Meredith opened the door to Arizona, who was awarded sole custody. She and Sofia happily headed home. Inside Meredith’s home, Callie sobbed. “How the hell did this happen?” she asked Meredith. Meredith replied, “What happens when there are two true mothers? That’s a no-win situation.“

As Meredith consoled Callie, Penny tried to console her distraught girlfriend, but Callie brushed her off, making it clear she didn’t want to see her right now. After all, Penny’s plans to move to New York ignited the whole custody debate, which subsequently lost Sofia for Callie.

Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on ABC.
