Hathaway, 30, was supposed to wear a Valentino gown to Sunday's ceremony, but decided on the now-infamous severely cut Prada dress instead to avoid a major red-carpet no-no. "It came to my attention late Saturday night that there would be a dress worn to the Oscars that is remarkably similar to the Valentino I had intended to wear, and so I decided it was best for all involved to change my plans," she said in a statement to People.
According to a photo on People's website, the dress Hathaway was supposed to wear was very similar to the Alexander McQueen gown her Les Miserables co-star Amanda Seyfried wore to the ceremony. "Though I love the dress I did wear, it was a difficult last minute decision as I had so looked forward to wearing Valentino in honor of the deep and meaningful relationship I have enjoyed with the house and with Valentino himself," she said. "I deeply regret any disappointment caused."
Hathaway has been friends with Valentino for several years. He personally designed the wedding dress she wore for her September 2012 nuptials.
According to US Weekly, Valentino's team sent out a press release announcing that Hathaway would be wearing one of the designer's creations to the Oscars just hours before the ceremony.
