‘American Idol’ Judges’ Way Too Dramatic Announcement of Top 24

On Thursday’s American Idol, the judges selected the top 24 contestants. However, they made the contestants squirm by making them think that they may not have been selected. We call that a fake out, and there were several memorable ones. Jennifer Lopez told one teary-eyed contestant, “I’m gonna keep this very short and sweet because I know how painful it can be. There is no way that we wouldn’t want you in our top 24 this year.” Harry Connick Jr. told Dalton Rapattoni, “You’re inconsistent. There’s nothing more exciting than going to see a performer and not know what direction he’s gonna come from. That’s you. We like it, and we want to see it on the top 24.” Keith Urban even tried his hand at a dramatic turn, but it seemed a little disjointed. “I’m glad that moment you had was memorable for you because in some cases, that’s where the journey is going to end. In your case, you’re in the top 24.” Despite their confusion, the top 24 contestants certainly celebrated after their meetings with the judges.

American Idol airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 pm on Fox.
