'American Horror Story': The 5 Freakiest Guest Star Appearances

image

Max Greenfield should be afraid… very afraid. By booking an as-yet-unrevealed role on American Horror Story: Hotel, the New Girl scene-stealer is likely setting himself up for an unpleasant stay. That’s because Ryan Murphy’s horror franchise has a well-known history of putting its high-profile guest stars through the wringer, assigning them some of the craziest scenes and most brutal deaths. At the same time, though, those WTF moments are a quintessential part of the AHS experience, for both the audience and the actors. It’s unclear at this point whether Greenfield will be merely a guest star or a more regular presence around the titular hotel (Murphy teased that he’ll be “checking in” but not “checking out”), but we kind of hope it’s the latter since on American Horror Story, guests stars, like blondes, have the most fun.

Here are the five freakiest guest star moments in AHS history:

5. Mare Winningham (Coven)

Who She Played: Alicia, disturbed mother of recently reanimated son, Kyle (Evan Peters).

Horrific Moment: Having her head bashed in by her flesh-and-blood is pretty terrible. But the revelation that she’s sexually abusing her son is even worse.

Freakiness Level: Yeccch! While we’d never go so far as to say that the punishment fits the crime, Alicia’s actions take some of the sting out of her gruesome end.

4. Matt Bomer (Freak Show)

Who He Played: Andy, a gay hustler sleeping with Dell (Michael Chiklis) who makes the unwise decision of taking on sadistic Dandy (Finn Wittrock) as a client.

Horrific Moment: Having tempted Andy aboard Twisty the Clown’s bus with a cool hundred bucks, Dandy proceeds to play a game of “Dismember the Gigolo,” using a vat of acid to dissolve his victim’s various limbs.

Freakiness Level: Yeep! The acid bath is what kicks this murder up a notch. But Bomer appears to have enjoyed himself — he’ll be back for Hotel in a larger role.

3. Eric Stonestreet (Murder House)

Who He Played: Derek, a troubled patient who regularly sees urban legends — like pig-faced serial killers — in mirrors.

Horrific Moment: On the advice of his therapist, Ben (Dylan McDermott), Derek finally faces his fear by calling out the so-called “Piggy Man” and delights to find that nothing bad happens. Well, provided you don’t count the whole “getting shot in the head by a lurking intruder” thing.

Freakiness Level: Yikes! Just when we had gotten over our whole Candyman thing, now we’ve got the Piggy Man and his giant pig-head to worry about every time we stare into a dark bathroom mirror.

2) Chloë Sevigny (Asylum)

Who She Played: Shelley, the rebel inmate at the Briarcliff Mental Institution, who receives a shockingly severe punishment for her continued defiance of authority.

Horrific Moment: Once again, amputation comes into play, but that’s just a warm up. After losing both her legs, Shelley is steadily worked over by Dr. Arthur Arden (James Cromwell) until she’s just barely recognizable as being human.

Freakiness Level: Yaaaargh! This is our worst nightmare of surgery gone wrong come to terrifying life.

1. Dylan McDermott (Asylum)

Who He Played: Johnny, the forcibly-conceived offspring of Lana (Sarah Paulson) and Dr. Thredson (Zachary Quinto) who continues his father’s killing ways as “Bloody Face.”

Horrific Moment: The scene where he reveals his favorite drink: breast milk, consumed directly from the source.

Freakiness Level: Yuuuuuuck! There’s a reason why we give this up as babies.
