‘American Horror Story’ Season 6 Teaser: Confirmation Of ‘AHS’ Shared Universe?

American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy has escalated his usual secrecy about the anthology series in advance of the upcoming sixth season, deliberately muddying the waters with several teasers that appear to bear no contextual relationship to one another.

That was intentional, according to FX boss John Landgraf, who straight up told attendees last week at TCA that the teasers aren’t even real. “(The marketing team) went out and made trailers for hypothetical seasons of American Horror Story.,” he claimed. “One of them is accurate and the others are all misdirects.” However, a major clue about the show was provided today by the release of a brand-new teaser that connects Season 6 with all previous seasons and appears to finally link all the storylines together in a shared universe. Crazy! See for yourself in the video above.

A montage of images recalling rubber suits, bloody nuns, triple kisses with (eww) a snake, the freak show carnival tent and the Hotel Cortez kick off the video before transitioning into a very quick rundown of images shown off in the previous Season 6 teasers. Then comes the tagline: “Murder. Madness. Magic. Misfits. Mayhem … Mystery?”

I previously suggested — based solely on the shot of a prairie farmhouse — that the season might be inspired by the notorious Bloody Benders family of serial killers who terrorized Kansas in the 1800s. But recent pics from the set have fueled speculation that the show actually is drawing inspiration from the Roanoke colony, an English Virginia (now North Carolina) settlement whose inhabitants mysteriously disappeared sometime between 1587 and 1590, leaving behind only a cryptic sign reading “CROATOAN” carved into a fencepost.

But what do we know? Nothing. Not, at least, until the Season 6 premiere on FX at 10 PM Wednesday, September 14.
