All the Best Stuff You Missed From the People’s Choice Awards

Joel McHale brought the entertainment community together as he hosted the People’s Choice Awards Wednesday night. As is tradition with awards show hosts, Joel made some pretty controversial political jokes, like “2016 was a very interesting year. We all watched as a longtime government insider squared off against an egotistical billionaire. I’m speaking, of course, about Captain America: Civil War.”

Joel got the night off to a funny start, and the laughs continued when Kevin Hart won Favorite Comedic Movie Actor. During his acceptance speech Kevin said, “This one goes to all of the co-stars that I’ve had, except the Rock, because he hasn’t helped me. He hasn’t helped me at all. You’ve actually lessened my talent.”

Other winners who rocked were Melissa McCarthy, who talked about getting into physical altercations with her fellow nominees; Justin Timberlake, who almost didn’t make it because he was stuck on the 101 freeway; and Tom Hanks, who said what everyone in the room was thinking. Tom said, “You make movies with guys like Bill Paxton, and you talk about it on Ellen DeGeneres’ show. You do all that work, and you come in third in that week’s box office between the latest Tyler Perry film.”

Speaking of Tyler Perry, the awkward award of the night went to Kristen Bell, who took a while to come out and introduce Tyler as the Favorite Humanitarian award winner. Once she made it onstage, things got even worse when the teleprompter went down, leaving her to finish the intro on her own.

The big winner of the night was Ellen DeGeneres, who took home her 20th People’s Choice Award, which is a new record. And she couldn’t quite wrap her head around it, saying, “This is amazing… Seventeen, I get it. Eighteen, sure. Nineteen, I can see that. But 20 is outrageous.”
