'Supergirl Is a Beacon for a Lot of People, Me Included' Says Star Melissa Benoist

One more week until the premiere of Supergirl. The pilot knocks out the introductions pretty quickly, leaving plenty of time for Kara Zor-El to save a plane full of people and payback a couple of beatdowns from an escaped Kryptonian convict. If you’re looking for an early meet-and-greet with the cast, though, CBS has provided this helpful featurette.

We get to hear from Melissa Benoist, who plays Kara, aka Supergirl. There’s also Chyler Leigh, who plays her human sister, Alex Danvers. Calista Flockhart is the prickly and powerful Cat Grant, who both exemplifies and exploits “girl power” (she is the one who gives Supergirl her name). Mehcad Brooks co-stars as the former Superman sidekick turned Pulitzer Prize-winning love interest James Olsen. And Greg Berlanti — who developed this series with Ali Adler and Andrew Kreisberg, and also executive produces Arrow and The Flash — gives us a quick rundown of the setup. First, there’s Kara’s family — well, families: One on Krypton and one on Earth. Then, there’s her work situation, which involves “the boss from Hell;” and finally there’s her superhero life, which begins when the Kryptonian criminals of Fort Rozz come out of hiding.

“She stands for bravery and hope and positivity personified,” says Benoist of her character. “She’s a beacon for a lot of people, me included.”

Supergirl premieres Monday, October 26 at 8 p.m. on CBS.
