'Saturday Night Live' #TBT: That Time Matthew McConaughey Compared Himself to Jesus

Alright, alright, alright… Matthew McConaughey is returning to Saturday Night Live to host for the first time since 2003. At that time, he was starring in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, and the McConaissance didn’t need to exist for many years yet.

Now, a dozen years later, he’s won an Academy Award for Dallas Buyers Club and been nominated for an Emmy for True Detective. But he’s still the same McConaughey we’ve known and loved and that SNL has enjoyed poking fun at many times.

This is a clip of the monologue from his last hosting gig, and the story he tells is, well, classic McConaughey. When he was a teen, he sported long hair (his brothers called him “Rasta Boy”) and sandals. When his dad called him out — ”you don’t even look like you’re a son of mine” — McConaughey thought he had the perfect answer.

“Jesus Christ wore sandals, Pop,” teen Matthew replied.
