'Saturday Night Live' #TBT: Praise Be to Julia Louis-Dreyfus

Bow down before Julia Louis-Dreyfus, queen of comedy. The woman has won seven (!) Emmy Awards on three different series — Seinfeld, New Adventures of Old Christine, and Veep.

Before she was bagging those trophies though, she got her start on Saturday Night Live, like so many acclaimed comedians do. She joined the cast in 1982 for three seasons, and created memorable characters like mean Becky from the “El Dorko” sketches, talk show host Consuela, and the superhero Weather Woman.

Perhaps her most indelible character was April May June, a former beauty queen turned televangelist. Louis-Dreyfus is hilariously terrifying as the wide-eyed, self-absorbed cash hoarder. In this throwback clip from 1982 — co-starring Louis-Dreyfus’ future husband Brad Hall — she recounts how she recently visited a country filled with diseased children who were “so ugly,” and demonstrates how she battles the devil on a daily basis. And of course, she does all of this as she encourages the viewers to contribute to her pledge drive. Jesus can’t win without money, folks!

Louis-Dreyfus returns to SNL this weekend to host for the third time with musical guest Nick Jonas.
