'MasterChef Junior' Sneak Peek: No Whine, Only Wine From This 8-Year-Old

What were you cooking when you were eight years old? Toast? Mac and cheese from the box? Something in an Easy Bake Oven? Probably not poached chicken with white truffle oil cream sauce, which is what MasterChef Junior contestant Kya is making this week.

Even in the age-restricted environment of this show, it’s hard for an 8-year-old to compete. The age ranges up to 13 and those few years can make a world of difference; the show’s youngest winner was 11.

But Kya’s confidence that she could go all the way may not be unfounded. Check out her Instagram and Facebook page where she talks about spending time in the kitchens of Thomas Keller’s Michelin-starred French Laundry and her ambition to represent the U.S. at the Bocuse d'Or, an international chef championship.

It’ll be thirteen more years before she’s able to buy the wine that she’s using to poach her chicken, but — whether she wins or loses MasterChef Junior — it’s a safe bet she’ll be using those years to become the world-class chef she was meant to be.

MasterChef Junior airs Fridays at 8 p.m. on Fox.
