'90210' canceled after five seasons

See ya, Beverly Hills -- the CW is ending "90210" when the fifth season concludes in May.

The teen soap suffered from dismal ratings -- averaging less than 1 million viewers a week and a microscopic 0.4 rating in adults 18-49.

Compare that to the network's hit, "The Vampire Diaries," which was watched by nearly 3 million viewers last week and actually beat both NBC and ABC in the valuable, advertiser-friendly demo.

The spinoff of the original "Beverly Hills, 90210" debuted in September 2008 to a lot of buzz, thanks to appearances by original cast members like Jennie Garth and Shannen Doherty. But after hitting a ratings peak with the season 3 premiere, the show's audience has fallen off dramatically. Even big-name guest stars like singer Carly Rae Jepsen and Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte didn't give the drama a boost.

The CW's decision is a reversal from remarks made by network president Mark Pedowitz in January, when he indicated that "90210" would likely get a sixth and final season to wrap up storylines. "I am a big believer in giving fans a very satisfactory conclusion," he told TV critics.

Now it's unclear if the writers will have time to plan for a series finale, which will air May 13.
