Wi-Fi Wednesday: Thanksgiving Air Travelers to Get Free Wi-Fi

On Wednesday, airports will be packed to the rafters with stressed-out travelers, squabbling families, and airport employees cranky at having to work during another holiday.

But on the bright side, you could get free Wi-Fi.

Verizon is teaming up with several partners to provide free goodies the day before Thanksgiving, which Verizon is calling “Connection Day.“ The goodies include free Wi-Fi for air passengers, regardless of their wireless carriers.

Fliers traveling through airports with Wi-Fi service provided by Boingo will get free Wi-Fi (how many free minutes you’ll get depends on the airport). In the air, passengers on planes serviced by Gogo will get 30 minutes of free Wi-Fi (participating airlines include American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Air Tran, United Airlines, US Airways and Virgin America).

JetBlue passengers get an even sweeter deal. They’ll get free in-flight Wi-Fi on the airline’s Fly-Fi service starting Wednesday through the rest of the year.

Verizon says its Oprah-style Wi-Fi giveaway is an act of holiday cheer. Verizon Wireless vice president of marketing Ken Dixon said in a statement: “We hope that not only our customers, but everyone, will take advantage of this day—a day to connect with family and friends, to learn something new about their device, or just to provide a little more entertainment during what can often be a hectic kick off to the holiday season.”

Still, Verizon must know that a giveaway to stressed-out holiday travelers isn’t exactly a bad marketing practice.

Regardless of the motivation, it’s a real sweet deal for air travelers. So if you end up having to email your family tomorrow to tell them that your plane’s been delayed for a couple of hours, it’ll hopefully be of some comfort to you’ll that you can do it on free Wi-Fi.
