Where the Deals Are: Cheapest U.S. Cities for Hotels in January

We all know January is a great time to travel cheap. If you have a free weekend coming up and you’re wondering where in the U.S. you can find the best deals, the booking site Hotwire has some data that suggests your best bets are in the Midwest.

Overall, Hotwire found the average daily rate for U.S. hotels in January to be $139. The hottest deals can be found in some of the coldest cities, so bring a coat: six of the 10 cheapest popular spots are in the Midwest, including the top three.

It’s a two-way tie for the cheapest average hotel rate – Milwaukee and Minneapolis at $71 per night. In third place is Chicago at $79 per night – and for all you can do indoors there, that’s a great value.

New York City isn’t known to be a bargain hotel destination, but it does rank No. 10 in Hotwire’s list with a $165 average hotel rate, making this an ideal time to catch a Broadway show there. And if you’re traveling to Cincinnati for Saturday’s Steelers-Bengals NFL playoff game, you’re in luck: the average rate is just $104 there.
