More Than Just a Blog Post: Female Travel Writers Shine on Vela

(Screenshot: Vela)

In 2011, six women launched Vela to showcase their travel-inspired writing and close the “byline gap” that they believed was stifling female writers. Since then, they’ve produced some hard-hitting long-form writing and been featured in the likes of the New Yorker and Wall Street Journal. While their articles are typically long, you can find snippets and photos on their Tumblr. As the site says, travel is a “jumping-off point”— the stories go far beyond travel guides, such as an American woman teaching in El Salvador and coming to terms with the country’s hopeless violence. You can write for Vela, too, by following their submissions policy.
