Tourist Robs Thai Bank at Gunpoint to Pay for Plane Ticket Home

An Australian tourist was arrested in Bangkok on Monday for allegedly using a fake gun to rob a bank in order to get enough money to get home.

According to the Bangkok Post, the tourist, Zachary Cronin, 23, robbed the Thanachart Bank in Bangkok while wearing what sounds like a completely amazing disguise—a Guy Fawkes mask, a floppy sun hat and goggles.

His weapon of choice was a BB gun.

Of course since the bank tellers had no way of knowing the gun was not real they counted out about 170,000 baht, ($4,800 USD) and gave it to the masked robber.

Bank staff was able to press a button alerting police to the robbery. The authorities caught up with Cronin just outside the bank. He admitted that he was stealing the money to try to get home after spending all of his cash while staying in the city’s red light district.

The Associated Press reported that Cronin has been charged with robbery which can carry a penalty of 10 years in prison.
