This is Where You Need to Celebrate National Lobster Day—Today!

Happy National Lobster Day!

Today lobster is seen as a seafood delicacy the world over, but it wasn’t always so highly prized. In fact, when the popularity of this spiny marine crustacean rose, way back in the 1800s, is was actually amongst the poorer classes.
Many New England servants lived off a diet solely consisting of lobster. There was even one community who passed a law limiting the frequency a household could feed lobster to their staff to just three times a week. It was even served in prisons to the inmates—much to their dismay. Back then you could walk down the beach at low tide and easily capture them. They were plentiful and cheap.

Oh, how things change.

Today, lobster fishing is a $1 billion industry in the state of Maine alone, with the delicious creatures fetching between $10 and $12 per pound at most markets. If you order lobster in a restaurant, expect to pay upwards of $32 for a one and a quarter pound whole lobster (bib included!) making them some seriously profitable commodities for the coastal communities who fish them.

Since today is National Lobster Day, Yahoo Travel explored some of the best places across the country to get crackin’ and indulge your love of lobster in all its meaty, butter soaked glory.
