The Greatest Holiday Market of All Time? It's at the Munich Airport

Airport layovers during the holiday season are normally associated with high blood pressure, low patience, and napping on the terminal floor. But we at Yahoo Travel would love to be stuck at Munich Airport right now.

Between the airport’s two terminals, amid all those incoming and outgoing flights, is a major league Winter Market that’s entertaining fliers and non-fliers alike until December 28 while reminding us that the Germans really know how to make the holidays fun.

The market, appearing for the 16th year and open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., dares you to be bored with these festivities:

Forty stalls with gifts and seasonal food and drink such as bratwurst and mulled wine.

  • A beer garden (it’s Munich, of course).

  • A curving ice slide for tubing IN the beer garden. The slide measures at 50 feet long and is making its Winter Market debut. Just be careful with the drinking and sliding.

  • A large ice skating rink that includes “after-work ice disco” with a DJ as part of their Winter Olympics on Thursday nights.

  • Open-air Movie Mondays featuring full-length films (warm blankets are provided).

  • Family-themed Tuesdays with treasure hunts, face painting, and arts and crafts workshops.

  • Live music on weekend nights, including jazz, rock, and gospel.

  • A curling rink (not a big deal in the U.S., but still!)

Other Winter Market events to watch out for are a visit from Santa Claus December 6, and drawings for free airport gifts, December 14 and December 28, and a visit from the Christ Child on December 20.
