Skateboarding Legend Tony Hawk Test Drives the World's First Hoverboard

In that 80s classic, Back to the Future, Marty McFly dazzled movie audiences by soaring through the air on a hoverboard, a floating skateboard.

Since then, a real-life hoverboard has only been a dream — though skateboarding legend Tony Hawk teased the world back in the spring with this spoof video that he starred in alongside the singer Moby:

Now, a company called Hendo Hoverboard has created a real-life hoverboard that is powered by four magnetic engines. It’s not quite as sci-fi as the one in Back to the Future (or the one in the video above), but it does float an inch above ground.

The hoverboard came to fruition because of a real-life Kickstarter campaign that raised a whopping $250,000, so that Marty McFly wannabes everywhere can travel the world by hoverboard.

The first 10 hoverboards cost $10,000 each and sold out before they were ever made. But Hendo offers a developer kit so that anyone can make their own hoverboard — for a whole lot less.

Next up: Hendo is trying to crowd-source a hoverpark to accommdate the high-tech boards.
