EPISODE 1: Smitten Ice Cream, San Francisco

This week I dashed around San Francisco and raced over to Smitten Ice Cream to meet owner and founder Robyn Sue Fisher. Smitten’s claim to fame is the famous “Brrr” machine that Robyn invented which is an ultra-cold churning process that makes the freshest custom ice cream in town in only 90 seconds.

WHAT:Smitten Ice Cream

WHY GO: All of the ice cream is made from scratch and to order, using only local and organic ingredients. They have some delicious flavors like: classic Vanilla and Chocolate and seasonal flavors like Strawberry White Balsamic.

WHEN TO GO: The store I visited in the hip neighborhood of Hayes Valley is open daily from M-T 12pm-10pm; Wed, Thurs, Fri from 12pm-10:30pm; Sat 11:30am-10:30pm and Sun 11:30am-10pm.

WHERE: The store operates out of a super cool, former freight shipping container at 432 Octavia St. #1A (at Linden St.) San Francisco, CA, 94102; Tel: (415) 863 1518.

FUN FACT: If you want some coffee to wash down your ice cream, right next to the Smitten container is the famous Blue Bottle Coffee Kiosk. They have just started making their New Orleans style coffee in cute to-go cartons but here’s the recipe if you want to try to make it at home.

“Photo Tripping” is a new series from Yahoo Travel, hosted by renowned celebrity photographer Melanie Dunea (author of My Last Supper). Melanie will take us on a photographic journey with her as she visits America’s top cities, exploring off-the-beaten path spots to experience the best tastes, sounds, and sights the city has to offer. Going on recommendations of her friends — chefs, celebrities and tastemakers, a couple of whom even come along for the ride — we uncover some truly special places, seen through the lens of a photographer.
