Oh, the Places You'll Go: Dr. Seuss Vacations Across America

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go,” wrote the incomparable Dr. Seuss in I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!

Besides a passion for educating children, the author clearly had a love of travel that he wove through many of his books, including Oh, the Places You’ll Go. So he would be proud to know that his birthday — Monday, March 2 — coincides with Read Across America Day. Established by the National Education Association, the day is dedicated to helping motivate children and teens to read. And it’s especially appropriate this year, with a new Dr. Seuss book, What Pet Should I Get, about to be released.

In addition to bookstores hosting readings across the country, the travel industry is rolling out the green eggs and ham in honor of the big day. Check it out:

Montage Hotels & Resorts

Each of the five properties in the Montage portfolio is honoring a different Dr. Seuss book. In South Carolina, the Inn at Palmetto Bluff, a Montage Resort (Feb. 28 – Mar. 2) is planning a fishy weekend devoted to One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. Look for fresh-water fishing lessons and a “Swedish Fish” turndown amenity. At the Montage Deer Valley in Utah (Feb. 27 – Mar. 2), there will be movies and crafts themed around the environmentally friendly Lorax. On Maui, Montage Kapalua Bay (Mar. 2) is dedicating a day of fun to Horton Hears a Who! — including a dive-in screening of the film, which was narrated by Jim Carrey, Carol Burnett, and Steve Carell. Everyone will be wearing striped hats for the The Cat in the Hat weekend at Montage Laguna Beach (Mar. 1 – 2) in California. And of course, no Seuss celebration would be complete without readings and treats surrounding Oh, the Places You’ll Go!, the title of choice at the Montage Beverly Hills (Feb. 28 – Mar. 2).

New Hampshire was the home of Seuss, so it figures that the Omni Mount Washington Resort would be serving a breakfast of green eggs and ham — followed by readings throughout the day.

Seuss Landing, Florida

Want to immerse yourself in everything Seuss? Head to Seuss Landing at Universal’s Islands of Adventure in Florida. From the High in the Sky Seuss Trolley Train Ride to the Circus McGurkus Café Stoo-pendous, there’s quintessential Seuss whimsy on display. And on the Caro-Seuss-el (get it, a carousel?), you can ride the elephant birds from Horton Hatches the Egg; the twin camels from One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish; and the cowfish from McElligot’s Pool. There’s also a fabulous bookstore, aptly named All the Books You Can Read.

Carnival

On many of the Carnival ships, it’s a Seuss-a-palooza, with story time and parades and characters to bring the books to life. Some of the ships also have a Dr. Seuss Bookville library, stocked with the classics. The good news: you can still hop on a last-minute departure, just in time for the big day. And the even better news: last-minute departures can go for up to 40 percent off. How about a four-day Baja cruise, leaving on Mar. 2 — Seuss’s birthday — from $259 a night?
