How to Make the Perfect Ski Resort Bloody Mary

Nothing says breakfast at a ski resort quite like the perfect Bloody Mary. The St.Regis Deer Valley does not disappoint in this department. The chain of hotels has a long history with the ruddy drink, serving different versions at all of their properties since 1934 when famed bartender Fernand Petiot perfected his version of a vodka and tomato juice cocktail.

Deer Valley’s recipe, one of the best that I have ever tried, is named the 7,452 Bloody Mary for the altitude of the resort in the Wasatch Mountains.

While I don’t advocate over-indulging before you hit the slopes, one Bloody Mary will help to warm you up a little for that grueling first ride on the chairlift.

The 7,452 begins with a stemless chardonnay wine glass rimmed with delicious black lava salt. To rim the glass you dip the top in agave nectar which adds a certain sweetness to the salt. Fill the glass just halfway with ice.

They don’t use just any old vodka here. This Bloody Mary takes High West Vodka 7000 straight from the distillery on Main Street in Park City which is famous for being the only ski-in, ski-out distillery and gastro-pub in the world.

With the vodka added we pour in the resort’s signature Bloody Mary mix. Naturally it’s a secret recipe, but I was able to cajole it out of bartenders just for you guys. What’s inside? Tomato juice, lemon juice, Worcester sauce, cornichon juice, sriacha, black pepper, celery salt and horse radish.

The piece de resistance, the one that makes this Bloody Mary stand out is the fact that it is topped with a wasabi, green apple and parsley and celery spuma (foam pureed and charged with nitrous) which you squirt onto your drink.

Add a dash of cayenne pepper on top and then, for one last kick, you’re given a pipette (the same kind used in junior high school chemistry class) filled with equal parts Worcester and tabasco.

Mix it all together, lick a little salt off the rim or just give yourself a wasabi mustache.

Last, but not least, drink up and hit the slopes.
