When it comes to celebrating the dawn of the New Year, it seems nothing can compete with the comforts of home and family – not the Times Square ball, not an exquisite Hawaiian beach, or any other travel destination.

A joint Yahoo Travel/Ipsos survey asking where people would rather be on New Year’s Eve found that the most popular answer by a wide margin was close to home, with friends and loved ones. Thirty-one percent of the 2,005 respondents gave that answer, with a tie for the second-most desired place: Times Square in New York City and Hawaii, each with 17 percent.

The rest of the breakdown goes like this: Paris was the ideal New Year’s spot for 10 percent of respondents, with London getting 7 percent, Dublin 4 percent, Buenos Aires 3 percent, Samoa (the earliest place to celebrate the New Year) 2 percent, and all other choices a combined 8 percent.

The respondents were all U.S. residents who have traveled for leisure at least once in the last three years, and they were polled between Dec. 12-15. Of those surveyed, 53 percent were female and 47 percent male; 52 percent were aged 35 years or older.

There were different travel preferences by age: the 18-34 set were more likely to go to Times Square, Paris, London, or Dublin for New Year’s, while those 35 and over preferred Hawaii or staying home.

New York was a popular choice elsewhere in the survey; when asked which city they’d most like to visit during the holidays, the Big Apple got the most votes with 30 percent. Miami was next closest at 16 percent.
